It is normally possible to make voluntary National Insurance Contributions (NIC) for the past six years. By doing this you ensure that your entitlement to state benefits including state pension are maximised.
There is currently an extension to this top up which allows individuals to fill gaps in their NIC record from 6 April 2006 to date via voluntary contributions which are set at the 2022/23 voluntary rate of £15.85 per week. This extension was due to end on 5 April 2023 but the government has just announced a limited extension to 31 July 2023.
From 1 August 2023 the time frame for making voluntary contributions will revert back to the usual 6 years and contributions will then increase to the higher rate of £17.45 per week.
If you are interested in checking your NIC records to see whether there is any gap in your record which could be potentially filled in this way, please do contact us for assistance.
